Timbrel Brigade

A timbrel brigade is a Salvation Army term for a group of people who play the tambourines. Tambourines may seem like an odd instrument to play in church, but they stem back to the earliest days of our tradition when tambourines (or ‘timbrels’ as the English called them) were popular pub and dance-hall instruments. Army Founder William Booth famously quipped, “Why should the Devil have all the good tunes?” The same ethos was applied to instruments; and so tambourines became a part of Salvation Army worship services.

Our timbrel group seeks to put a new emphasis on a great tradition. This group is open to anyone (male or female) that has a desire to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.”
